Scientific Games Launches Stadium Blackjack Proves Popular

July 18th, 2017 by Dustin Jermalowicz

Scientific Games has launched a new land casino product called ‘Stadium Blackjack’ at casinos in Nevada, and the game has proven to be a hit among those that have given it a try.

The game has a live blackjack dealer table that’s cards are played out and displayed on terminals seated in the area, where players can make their wagers and bets right on the screen. The game is then played out and the results are paid out. Since its launch at the Venetian earlier this year the game has proven to be popular among players, who are able to access the game with lower limits and participate in larger numbers, where table spots can be hard to come by.

Right now the game is still being deployed at casinos and the title can also be found at the Palazzo, which is part of the same property set. The game’s rules aren’t spectacular as it has a 6:5 payout.

Have you had a chance to play Stadium Blackjack? If so, what have your experiences been?

Seminoles and Florida Sign New Blackjack Compact

July 6th, 2017 by Dustin Jermalowicz

Today the state of Florida and the Seminole Native American tribe announced that they’ve come to an agreement on a new compact that will see the tribe getting exclusive rights to blackjack games in exchange for $340 million in payments to the state annually.

The agreement ends a dispute that’s been raging for years between the two parties, and will bring both groups satisfaction. The tribe will pay $340 million annually for the next 13 years and will have exclusive rights to shoe games at their casinos.

A previous dispute between the groups arose when the state began allowing outside groups the chance to offer electronic versions of shoe games at establishments. The tribe ceased payments to the state but continued offering the games, citing the breach in contract as their reason. A federal court judge agreed, and Florida vowed to appeal the case to the Supreme Court if necessary. Now it appears as though that won’t be necessary moving forward.

A spokesman for the tribe spoke glowingly about the deal, noting: “The settlement agreement ensures a stable future for the members and employees of the Seminole Tribe of Florida, and the Tribe appreciates the hard work of Gov. Scott and DBPR (the Department of Business and Professional Regulation) to get it done.”

The promotion will go from 7:00pm through 10:00pm Eastern time and will see players getting a free hand of blackjack for every ten hands played. The value of the free hand will be averaged over the course of the ten previous hands played. Winnings on those hands will be subject to a 15x playthrough before they can be cashed out.

The deal appears to be good for several types of blackjack on both sites, but it should be noted that blackjack games in the standard Intertops casino are not eligible for the promotion. You must play at Intertops Poker of Juicy Stakes to get in on the action.

A statement put out by Intertops quoted a manager as saying: “Playing a few hands of Blackjack is a great way to relax after a hard week. Playing some of those for free is even better!”

Woman Busted for Past Posting in Blackjack

June 14th, 2017 by Dustin Jermalowicz

A woman from Long Beach Mississippi was arrested this week for cheating at Blackjack at the Scarlet Pearl Casino and now she is being charged for violating a state law related to gambling.

36 year old Shantel Monique Welch was arrested for “past posting” on the 21+3 blackjack game at the casino, which is where a punter increases the value of their bet after they already know the outcome of the game. In the case of Ms. Welch, she was increasing her bet after cards were dealt on the table. In Mississippi, that is in violation of Mississippi Code 75-76-301(e), which reads: “To place or increase a bet after acquiring knowledge of the outcome of the game or other event that is the subject of the bet, including past-posting and pressing bets.”

She was taken into custody and given a bond of $5,000, 10 percent of which must be paid to leave jail. She is being charged with a felony and could serve years in prison if convicted.

Wizard of Odds Gives Blackjack Tips to Las Vegas Sun

May 22nd, 2017 by Dustin Jermalowicz

Renowned casino game analyst Michael Shackleford (also known as the Wizard of Odds) has provided an array of helpful blackjack tips to the Las Vegas Sun newspaper, offering insight that every player visiting the tables should know.

The Wizard is the purveyor of our sister site Wizard of Odds, and he provided the Las Vegas Sun with a bunch of information on how to maximize your odds of success at the popular card game. Among his advice was:

  • Don’t ever play 6:5 games
  • Never take insurance
  • Surrender a 16 against a 10 if you’re allowed
  • Never make side bets, as they’re all sucker bets
  • Double down on a soft 13 through 18 against a medium dealer 4 through 6

A lot of these are common sense, but not all players will understand the surrender or double down rules. Blackjack is incredibly popular throughout the world, as it is simple to play and has a relatively low house edge.

Shackleford has become known as the Wizard of Odds over the past twenty years, as he has listed odds for games like slots and posts strategy guides for table games. He is also known for coming up with the Most Popular Baby Names lists, which is accessed by people throughout the world.

Study: Your Eyes Give You Away Playing Blackjack

July 5th, 2016 by Dustin Jermalowicz

This week a study by Kevin Holmes of Colorado College revealed that a player’s eyes have a tendency to glance to a side depending on their cards.

The study, which is titled “Gamble on gaze: Eye movements reflect the numerical value of blackjack hands“, revealed that players who have high-value cards tend to look to the right, while those with low-value cards tend to look to the left. This is an involuntary behavior, as players are doing math in their heads to calculate their best move.

The study used two blackjack experiments, wherein 58 participants played blackjack on a computer, with their eye movements being recorded.

Speaking about the study Holmes said, “Gamble on gaze: Eye movements reflect the numerical value of blackjack hands.”

The study has been published in the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.

The implications for this study have not been revealed, but will update this story as more developments arise.

MGM Looking to Add 1,000 Dealers, Will Open Dealer School

April 26th, 2016 by Dustin Jermalowicz

The MGM National Harbor Casino will be working with the Prince George Community College to open a school for table game dealers in order to fill nearly 1,000 jobs for blackjack and games that will be available at the soon-to-open casino.

Students attending the school will get a six-week education in blackjack dealing, with the chance to either take a four-week baccarat course, eight-week roulette course, or twelve-week craps course. Those interested in educating themselves in the games will need to put up $380, and classes are set to start May 16th.

Those that complete the schooling will then be able to apply for a job as a dealer at the MGM National Harbor Casino, although taking the class does not guarantee placement. Applicants will undergo stringent background checks, and will have to show good customer service skills, and the ability to deal two different games.
Dealers at other properties generally make around $50-60k, with tips being included after the fact.

MGM National Harbor is expected to open in the fourth quarter of 2016 and will mix in three different restaurants as well as a full resort that will also feature an entertainment venue.
