A familiar table can hide a different game
A variant may give you an attractive new option and recover that value through another rule. Seeing both dealer cards, exchanging cards or discarding a poor hand can help, but a reduced natural payout or altered tie rule changes the calculation. Read the complete combination before borrowing a standard chart.
| Variant | First rule to investigate |
|---|---|
| Face Up 21 | Both dealer cards are exposed; inspect tie rules. |
| European blackjack | No-hole-card settlement and exposure of extra wagers. |
| Match Play 21 | Numbered tens are removed; bonus and winning-21 rules matter. |
| Pontoon | Identify the regional version before learning its vocabulary. |
| Blackjack Switch | Two equal bets and an option to exchange second cards. |
| Zappit | Eligible hands may be replaced; inspect dealer-22 rules. |
| Super 21 | Special winning hands and reduced ordinary natural payouts. |
| 21st Century | A version-specific cardroom game, not a universal ruleset. |
Make a rule card
Use six headings: deck, natural payout, dealer procedure, ties, doubling/splitting, and special wins. Copy the actual help screen into your notes in your own words. If the game has a side bet, give that wager a separate entry: its payout and probabilities are not the main game’s.
For example, replacing a weak hand sounds useful. Before valuing it, ask which totals qualify, whether replacement is allowed once or repeatedly, and whether a replacement ace-ten is paid as a natural. A missing exception can outweigh a memorable headline feature.
A dealer finishes on 22. Is your surviving hand always a winner?
No. Some variants turn specified dealer-22 outcomes into pushes. The rules must say which player hands are exempt; ordinary blackjack assumptions are not enough.
Practice the difference first
Learn one variant at a time. Start by finding five situations where its rules differ from standard blackjack, then explain how each difference changes settlement or available actions. This is more useful than memorizing a list of casino names. Use the linked guides as introductions, then match any strategy to the exact version.
